HyperX Cloud Stinger Core Gaming Headset Review

Written by

Looking for an affordable and dedicated gaming headset designed for game consoles, with good bass, durable, clear sound, a clean connection and a clear microphone?

HyperX just launched a dedicated PS4 gaming headset, the Cloud Stinger Core. This newest member of the HyperX range brings great comfort with its light weight, adjustable steel slider, flexibility, and soft mesh ear cushion along with clear immersive in-game audio performance. The street price of Cloud Stinger Core is $40 or around PHP 1,995.

It will also work on other game consoles like XBOX One, Nintendo Switch and even on mobile phones and Macbook’s. However, we’re also curious to see if this Cloud Stinger Core is better than other budget gaming headset.

Look and Feel

HyperX is going for the matte black plastic finish on the Cloud Stinger Core. The matte provides a bit of contrast to the overall design of the headset, with the glossy finish HyperX logo on the top of the headband and back of both ear pieces, and the shiny adjustable steel bar inside. The ear pad cushion is a round shape that features a soft mesh cloth material, with the same soft mesh on the headband pad as well. The glossy blue rubber in the middle of the cushion and the ear pieces matches the color theme of a PS4 system. People who love the PS4 console will probably like this gaming headset. So far, they only have the blue option available.

The vertical/horizontal swivel microphone is similar to other HyperX headsets, that is durable firm, and flexible to adjust. Although, the mic is not covered with a padded cover that helps reduce audio pops. But, this kind of feature didn’t reduce the noise cancelling of the headset.

You’ll also be surprised when touching the wire of the headset; it is very soft and rubbery, and it’s like touching silicone. The wire also has enough length to plug into your PS4 controller or other game console device and it has a fixed y-splitter wire to protect it from unwanted tearing.

The overall design is minimalist, clean and ultra-modern.

Comfort

The ear pads and headband pads which are made with soft mesh fabric fell supremely comfortable and squishy for a budget headset. It is very soft, easy to clean and almost no weight to it.  The design of the cushion completely surrounds the ears without any pressure, even with an extended game session. It also creates a bearable climate and isolation that minimize outside noise.

The adjustable steel slider is very helpful for larger heads, offering ample height adjustment to make it less tight and comfortable according to your preferences.

The lesser length of the wire is also very ideal for game consoles and mobile gaming, as you don’t have to worry about a tangled wire while playing your favorite games.

Sound Performance

The sound coming out from the speaker is clean and we haven’t heard any faulty noise. During our test, the sound quality of this headset is better than any typical budget gaming headset. Compare to other budget headset that sound spongy and metallic, this headset provides clear and snappy sound.

It also has a vibrating bass when playing games like Battlefield 1 and other war games. The sound pleasantly immerses you in your gaming experience.

For comparison, We tested it with the Nintendo Switch to compare the built-in speaker. Surprisingly, we see a lot of difference. The Cloud Stinger Core has a new level of sounds, it is way more louder, solid bass, clean sound and every tiny details of sounds can now be hear, it’s an incredible improvement.

Functionality & Interface

The in-line audio controls and mute switch are both located down the wire near the y-splitter. They’re are both easy to operate, a volume wheel to increase and decrease the volume and switching the mics on and off. Operating these controls while gaming is so important, it is easy to reach from the wire and you don’t need to push the volume button several times to adjust the volume, instead by just rolling it. HyperX did a very good job of designing this functionalities.

If you’d like to use this on a PC or an XBOX One, you need extra accessories to do that, a Y-Splitter hub in order to use the headset. For PC, if you have an existing HyperX Cloud II USB Control Box – this can be used.

Microphone

One of the most important parts of the gaming headset is a microphone. Communicating effectively with other players in the online game is one of the key factors of winning a game. The microphone in Cloud Stinger core is not that perfect, but speaking through it allows others to perfectly hear the conversation, without needing you to repeat yourself to make them hear.

We have tested the mic over a Skype call and it does the job; it ranks near the top headsets as far as the quality of the mic goes.

What’s lacking is that the mic is non-detachable and cannot be moved to other ears. However, it is easy to operate to put it on the front or side. The flexible microphone can be placed exactly where you want and it stays there most of the time, you can also bend it into any desired shape.

Inside the mic there is a small piece of foam that acts as the noise cancellation. Compared to the HyperX Cloud II that has a separate foam bobble condenser, the Cloud Stinger Core condenser is embedded inside the mic.

Conclusion

No doubt, so far this is one of the best affordable gaming headset on the market with it’s minimalist design and perfect fit for gaming consoles. The HyperX Cloud Stinger Core is a dedicated gaming headset for gaming consoles and mobile phones, and can be used for PC too.

Not just a headset for gaming, it can also be used for listening to music and watching videos because of its great quality. If this headset was not labelled just for gaming, it could be the best headset for everyone – beating those expensive headsets on the market.

For gamers who prefers budget friendly, comfortable, clear sound and effective noise cancellation over expensive gaming headset, HyperX Cloud Stinger Core is for you.

HyperX has done a great job of creating an attractive headset design, despite its low price. The Cloud Stinger core is a premium looking headset.
