Google Now Lets Eligible Gmail Users Change Old Email Usernames Without Making a New Account

Written by

If you are still using a funny or outdated Gmail username from years ago, Google now has an option that may finally let you change it without starting over. The feature is currently available to all U.S. users, while broader access outside the U.S. still appears to be limited or gradual. For eligible accounts, users can change the part before @gmail.com while keeping their previous address saved as an alternate email, so messages sent to the old one still arrive in the same inbox.

To check if your account can do it, visit https://myaccount.google.com/u/3/google-account-email and open the Google Account email section.

If your account is eligible, the button “Change Google Account email” will appear. If not, Google says the option may not be available for that account, and some users may instead see “This setting can’t be changed for your account.”

If the option appears, the process is simple: enter the new Gmail username you want, confirm the change, and follow the on-screen steps. Once done, your new Gmail address becomes your main Google Account email, while the old one stays attached as an alternate. Google also says you can still sign in using either the old or new address on services like Gmail, YouTube, Maps, Drive, and Google Play.

There are still a few important limits to know before changing it. Google says you can switch back to your old Gmail address at any time, but you cannot create another new Gmail address for the same account for 12 months. The company also notes that some older records, apps, and services may still show or use the old email for a while, especially third-party apps or services that rely on Sign in with Google.

For many users, this is a small but welcome quality-of-life update, especially for people who made their email address long before they ever needed it for resumes, business contacts, or professional work. While Google says the feature is now available across the U.S., availability outside the country appears to be expanding gradually, including in our case where the option was already available.
