Live-service and online games are usually designed to run for years, supported by updates and an active player community. However, not every release manages to survive long enough to build that momentum. In some rare cases, games shut down only days or weeks after launch due to low player numbers, negative reception, or developers deciding it was no longer sustainable to keep the servers running.

One of the most recent examples is Highguard, a multiplayer shooter that launched on January 26, 2026. The game is scheduled to shut down on March 12, 2026, giving it a lifespan of around 45 days. Highguard joins infamous early shutdown games, taking the 4th spot at 45 days, still behind The Day Before, which remains one of the fastest modern game collapses.

That infamous record belongs to The Day Before, which launched on December 7, 2023 and collapsed just four days later on December 11 after heavy backlash and controversy surrounding its release.

Another extremely short-lived title is The Culling 2, which lasted only eight days before being pulled from sale due to overwhelming negative feedback from players.

Even large publishers have experienced similar situations. Concord, Sony’s hero shooter live-service title, launched on August 23, 2024 but struggled to attract players. The servers were taken offline on September 6, 2024, giving it a lifespan of only 14 days before refunds were issued.
These cases highlight how difficult it can be to sustain online games in today’s competitive market. With hundreds of multiplayer titles competing for players’ time, even highly marketed projects can disappear quickly if they fail to maintain a stable community.
