Sony Will End Physical Disc Production for New PlayStation Games Starting January 2028

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that physical disc production for all new games released on PlayStation consoles will end starting in January 2028. After the transition, newly released PlayStation games will only be available digitally through the PlayStation Store and participating retailers.

According to an official announcement published on the PlayStation Blog, Sony made the decision in response to changing consumer preferences and the entertainment industry’s continued shift from physical media toward digital distribution. The company said digital media now significantly outpaces physical discs among players.

The change will only affect new games released beginning in January 2028. PlayStation titles that have already launched physically, as well as games scheduled to receive disc editions before that date, will not be affected. This means existing physical copies can still be sold and played after the transition.

Sony added that it will continue working with retailers while investing its resources in new ways for players to access games. Although PlayStation games will continue, the announcement marks the approaching end of an era for collectors who enjoy owning cases, displaying their libraries, and opening brand-new physical copies.
