Metal Slug has officially turned 30, marking three decades since the iconic run-and-gun arcade classic first launched on April 19, 1996.

To celebrate the milestone, SNK has launched its Metal Slug 30th Anniversary Project, a broader initiative aimed at honoring the franchise’s legacy while also helping push it into the future. According to SNK, the project will include multiple efforts to reignite and reboot the series, including the development of new games.

First released in arcades and remembered for its simple controls, frantic action, and standout pixel art, Metal Slug quickly became one of the most recognizable NEOGEO titles of its era. Over the years, the series expanded through sequels and spin-offs, building a loyal fanbase across arcades, home consoles, handhelds, and modern platforms.

As part of the anniversary celebration, SNK has also rolled out a special 30th anniversary website, dedicated official social media accounts, and a retrospective video looking back at the franchise’s history and legacy. More celebratory content is expected to be released in the coming months.

Thirty years later, Metal Slug remains one of arcade gaming’s most beloved classics, and SNK is making it clear that the mission is not over yet.
