Good news to all RE fans! Resident Evil 2 Remake can now be played with a friend thanks to a new unofficial mod that introduces local 2-player cooperative gameplay to the survival horror game.

The new mod, called Local Couch Co-op, formerly known as HUNK’y Friend, was created by modder Shopcreeper01 and released on Nexus Mods on October 4, 2026. It allows a second player to join Leon or Claire as HUNK or other playable characters while exploring Raccoon City together.
Play Together on One Screen or Split Screen
The mod supports several ways to play the game, including shared-screen gameplay, split-screen mode with separate cameras, and classic fixed camera angles when paired with another mod.
Players can also choose a bot companion instead of a second human player. The companion can follow instructions, assist during encounters, and provide support throughout the adventure. However, since this is a fan-made mod, some features may still have bugs or performance limitations.
How to Get the Co-op Mod
The mod is now available for the Steam PC version of Resident Evil 2 Remake and requires REFramework to work. Players will also need two controllers or a keyboard-and-mouse setup paired with a controller.
This is not an official multiplayer update from Capcom, but it offers a new way for friends to experience the game together on the same PC.
